Blog Post #23: The Tail End

When I first started this blog, I created a road map for how I was hoping this endeavour to turn out. The first time I tried creating a regular blog, I ended up telling a ton of people, getting 20+ people signed up, started pumping out content, and then…. two weeks later I missed my first blog, and the whole enteprise gurgled down the drain.

On this occasion, I decided to get 20 days of consistency before inviting my immediate family, and I am proud to announce that I have my first family subscriber, my sister!

I was fortunate to be able to have a two hour chat with her today, which was easily the highlight of my day. The last couple of days I have been trying to shake off Covid (perhaps), and have felt pretty rubbish. Having a chance to chat with my sister was certainly a bright spot in between coughing, spluttering, sneezing and feeling like a sack of potatoes.

Conversations that last over two hours usually require a variety of cadences, an idea which is captured by the expression of “talking about everything and nothing”. In this instance, we talked about serious topics such as relationships, legal strife, and her new job, as well as mundane topics such as how shitty British coffee is, the time our cat ran away from our abusive neighbour, and her friend’s bottom tier boyfriend.

I think it may illegal to not write a blog post about taking the time to chat with family members without referencing The Tail End by Tim Urban. Taken from the blog Wait but Why, The Tail End explains how life experiences are not linearly distributed. Income and in particular wealth are back-ended, most people have a lot more financially in the second half of their life. However, time with your parents is crazily front-loaded; Tim estimates that by the time you turn 18, you’ve already spent 93% of the total time you will ever spend with them. Assume you live to 90, that means for the next 72 years you will spend 0.092% of your total time with them each year. No, that isn’t an error, I triple checked.

Thanks for the chat Liv, I hope you like this blog!
