Justin Trudeau stepped down today after 10 years in charge. It’s been coming.
I can’t say I know a lot about him, but it was definitely the right decision. Like many democracies, governments are rarely voted in; rather, they’re voted out, and Mr Trudeaus’ had overstayed his visit.
It takes a long time for historians to accurately remember someone. Jimmy Carter was considered a dreadful president when he got booted in 1981; when he passed away last week, most people mourned a great American.
For Trudeau, I don’t think it will go down well. Not since Blair have we seen someone soar so high, and fall so low, within their reign.
Back when Justin first came to power, he was considered by many, particularly college-educated, left-leaning women, to be the best thing since sliced bread. Politics is Hollywood for ugly people, and he really does have a great head of hair.
But things are rotten in the Far North. Housing prices are high, wages are low, and lots of people feel despair about the future. I hear similar echoes in parts of Australia and New Zealand, but at least the weather is nice.
Anyway, there is going to be a lot written about this, both now and in the future. I still think it’s rough to have a crack at a bloke having a crack, and putting your hand up to lead is a tough job that’s poorly paid and receives little thanks.
Enjoy retirement Mr Trudeau.
