Arranged

Note: Yesterday I referred to a meal as raging. What I meant to say was ragù, and for those who wonder, yes, it was delicious.

A writer I follow on Substack wrote about how he predicted an increased trend of “arranged marriages” in the US over the coming years.

He was careful to define what he meant; “arranged marriages” weren’t forced marriages, and certainly weren’t consanguineous. Rather, the idea was that parents, who knew their child well, and wanted the best for them, would nudge them in the right direction, from introductions to encouragement.

Choosing a partner is an extremely important decision, probably THE most important. Yet his argument, and fair enough, is that leaving young people alone to make this decision solo, aided only by alcohol and apps, does very little to maximise the odds of a successful, long term partnership.

I’m not fully convinced. I met my wife on an app, so did both my sisters, and my sister in law. What was once fringe has become very much mainstream. I understand there are downsides to them, but they DO offer people a chance to find partners outside their circles, which is great at many levels, including social mobility.

However, I do see the logic of my friend’s piece, and for those who are looking for a relationship, but struggling to do so, it could be another avenue to wander down.

Like everything, I guess we will just have to wait and see.
