Thank you for those who wrote in to share some of their favourite sayings. Here are three that I thought were worth sharing:
Blind Freddy could have told you that: Apparently this is a fairly common idiom in Australia, but I don’t think I have ever heard it used bar the person who messaged me, who uses it pretty much daily. It is used when something is blindingly obvious, for example, the Hawk Tuah Coin was so obviously a scam, even Blind Freddy could have told you that. Interestingly, Freddy is a fictional character, although some say it refers to an 1860s Sydney Policeman Sir Frederick Pottinger.
Is the juice worth the squeeze: This one came from a friend who is completing his medical studies, looking after a one year old, a dog, has another on the way, all while playing Gaelic football for Australia. With quite a busy itinerary, asking “is the juice worth the squeeze” a great way to determine whether the outcome is worth effort/investment, and to focus on prioritization. A great one!
Massive Win Today: This is very much an inside joke, created way back when I was working at Kiwibank. The details are slightly murky, but the gist of it was that I had volunteered to run an internal coaching event on a Friday afternoon, and completely forgot about it until 30 minutes to go. I ended up doing the most appallingly hamfisted job, and completely stunk.
I went back to my desk and had a few beers with two workmates to commiserate about the disaster. While slurping back a few Genghis Cans, I tried to rectify the situation by writing an email to the team wishing them a good weekend and thanking them for their participation. However, the subject was MASSIVE WIN TODAY, as I had originally written an over the top email talking about how the whole thing was indeed successful as a bit of a joke, with no intention to send. I cleaned up the message, but forgot the subject, and by the time I hit SEND, it was too late.
In a twist of fate, the leadership team couldn’t make the session, and only saw the email referring to the MASSIVE WIN TODAY, and concluded it was a resounding success!
MASSIVE WIN TODAY is used ironically, and is usually shortened to MASSIVE WIN. Will it catch on? Not at all, but for the three of us that experienced it, it will remain a regular staple on our group chat.
