I received an email today from LinkedIn, saying I had just clocked up thirteen years on the platform. It certainly hasn’t been memorable.
LinkedIn gets a lot of hate, and understandably so. Some of the most inane, masturbatory, and try-hard behaviour bubbles up on the site far too often, see Exhibit A below.

But some of the hate is unfounded. Yes, there is a bunch of low quality material. Yes, there are a ton of people who are congratulating themselves on new jobs. And yes, there are far, far too many people who treat the comments section like LinkedIn.
But it serves its purpose. Almost everyone I know is on it. It’s a great way to find clients, customers, and ultimately hirers. It was how I ended up with my job at Kiwibank, so I can’t be one to judge too harshly.
If I had to guess, most people spend very little time on LinkedIn, and when they do venture on, it is ONLY when they are looking for a new job, sometimes desperately. In the same way lawyers are often poorly perceived; the only time people require their services are when poor fortunate has befallen them.
