I became an uncle a few days ago. Olive Isla Pattison was born on the 19th of December, and she’s been a real joy to her parents. Ky’s sister, Dee, has been putting on a mothering masterclass as we stay with them to help out.
It’s very rare to see newborn babies. They’re often sheltered away, and when they do make it out, they’re hardly going to be seen at the pub or the office. So when you do see a one week old, a few things strike you, even if you’re a parent yourself.
They are so small, so delicate, and almost non-human. They struggle to open their eyes or move about, which is wild when you consider so many animals can pop out of their egg or mom and just get about their lives.
It reminds me of how much I have forgotten from those days. It’s a small period of time, which feels like forever.
It’s been nice to see them all.
