I have decided to pull on the boots for one last season of Australian Rules Football. At 34, the costs of playing full contact sports increases with every passing day.
Part of my motivation is that it will be a fun way to stay fit and make friends. But another part of it is leaving the game on a high.
I haven’t had a lot of luck in this sport. At high school we got battered, winning one game in our last two years (although our year 10 team was DOMINANT). At senior level, when I played in the reserves we missed out on finals, and when I played in the club level, we won the grand final, but I wasn’t selected for the grand final. As for college football, in the UK, we lost our varsity game to Cambridge, and the national championship was canned due to Covid. In Australia, we lost to a very good UWA in the final to come second at UniGames.
So a lot of Ls, a silver medal or two, and honestly, a lot of fun, good times, and happy memories. As mentioned in a previous post, the Denver Bulldogs are part of the Big Three (along with the Austin Crows and NY Magpies), and so if we’re going to go out on a high, this is the way to do it.
