Last night, I went to somewhere I haven’t been in years: a nightclub. Let me explain.
I met a law professor many moons ago during my time as a UATX Fellow, better known on this platform as the Incel Academy, and we have been fast friends since day one. What I admire about Eric is his breadth of interests; academically, he’s working on research from space governance to blockchain regulation. Outside of the classroom, he’s an avid skier, wine collector, outdoor explorer, and EDM connoisseur. So when one of his favourite acts was in town last night, he decided to invite me along.
The Bass Couch is a side section with the Black Box nightclub. It’s a tiny little alcove with a couch, enough space to stretch out and boogie, and close enough to see the DJ work his magic. For older patrons (I’m 34, a decade younger than Professor Alston), it’s nice to be able to enjoy your favourite acts that come on at 12, while not having to be on your feet from 9pm.
Last night’s fare was Drum and Base, something I’m not particularly enmeshed in, but I’m always up to try new things. The sound system was clearly optimised for pumping heaving bass waves into the crowd, which was a real eclectic mix. At least on person in their 60s was out there getting their groove on.
I’m really glad I went, and also glad that I could still be home in bed by 1:30. Even with the Bass Couch, that’s late enough for me these days.
