Today was a wonderful day, celebrating a wonderful person. My wife puts an enormous amount of effort into our family, so O and I wanted to make sure she had a great day.
It started with Brunch, which is always such a treat. We went to Bistro Vendrome, a French inspired, sadly English speaking restaurant. It’s rather good, especially their crepes. O approved.
After that, a quick trip over to Pearl Street for the farmers’ markets. They were heaving; but that didn’t bother us, we were there for the Japanese bakery to pick up a matcha and a curry puff. Absolutely divine.
It was around midday, and while Ky and O had a nap, I got to work on dinner. We have had our very first family pet, a lobster, living in our fridge overnight, and sadly his time had come. A sharp knife through the brain was the first step of preparing the meal, but it wasn’t the last.
Ravioles de homard à la bisque de cognac, or lobster ravioli, is a real labour of love. Cooking and then butchering the crustacean is a difficult and frequently painful experience. Reducing the stock to a bisque takes ages. Making fresh pasta was way tougher than I expected. And the whole things goes from plate to gut in under 5 minutes.
I must say it was very, very good. Possibly top 10 all time things I’ve made. So rather happy.
Dessert was a crème brûlée, blowtorched by what I assume is a welding tool I picked up at the hardware store. O was a big fan of this.
I’ve spent a lot of time writing about the food, and it was a pleasure to cook and serve, but the most special part of the day was spending time with Ky and O.
It really is a blessing.
