I, Cloudius

I deployed my first program to the cloud today. It wasn’t on my 2026 bingo card list, but I’m glad I did.

For those who are unfamiliar with cloud computing, here is my best guess at what is happening; you’re essentially outsourcing the computing demands from your machine to a bigger, more powerful one.

All readers of this blog will be familiar with cloud storage; upload a photo from your phone to the cloud, save some space, and then recall it when you need it. For cloud deployed apps, it’s the exact same process, instead of running the operation on your machine, you’re running it thousands of miles away, then having the results (or errors) ported back.

The key takeaway was a) how relatively straightforward it was and b) how absurdly cheap it was. I think the whole process cost under 7 cents, and just for signing up, I was gifted $30 in credit. So far, so free.

If there is a process you want to push onto the cloud, I would highly recommend checking out Modal. No referral link, just my full endorsement.

See you in the cloud!
