It sucks to be average

There are some careers where being “mid” is totally fine. The median Federal Government employee does just fine. So does the average person working in financial services or healthcare. Not everyone is the hedgefund rainmaker or lead surgeon, but the person at the 50th percentile isn’t missing rent.

Other careers are way differently distributed. Journalism. Artists. Athletes. And now, Venture Capitalists.

This chart comes from Carta, a leading provider of services to VCs and early stage companies. The thing you need to know is that unless you have invested in a top 10% fund, you’re not going to do any better than being in the S&P 500. In the bottom 50%, you might as well keep it under your mattress. The bottom 20%, might as well throw your cash in the fire.

If you’re lucky enough to be in a top fund, you’re going to have a great time.

Act accordingly.
