Cricket World Cup.

The Cricket World Cup is on at the moment, and is being hosted by the West Indies and, can you believe it, the USA! Unfortunately, Dallas, Ft Lauderdale and New York aren’t exactly around the corner, so I won’t be catching any games live, but it’s nice to have it in the time zone.

This world cup is the T20, where both teams get a maximum of 20 overs of 6 deliveries to score as many runs as possible without having all their batsmen run out. This makes the game more than 11 times shorter than a Test Match, which can go for 450 overs across five days.

The shortened format means upsets are far more likely. Yesterday, the very strong West Indies scraped by a brave Papua New Guinea team, Oman lost in overtime to Namibia, one of the growing talents in the world of cricket.

The big guns haven’t come out yet, with Australia, India, and England yet to play, but South Africa was on cruise control this morning when they completely dismantled Sri Lanka.

It should be a great tournament, and there is no clear favourite. And it will be interesting to see if viewership breaks the 2019 record of 1.6 billion. Only the Olympics and FIFA World Cup attract more eyeballs.
