Not my first rodeo

Ky and I knocked off one of our US bucket list items today; attending a rodeo! It was Ky’s first time, and we had a blast.

This wasn’t the PBR; but very much a local event. If anything, it meant we probably enjoyed it even more. Here are some of the highlights.

The event kicked off with our favorite event, the Mutton Bustin’! The rules are simple: hold on to a sheep for as long as you can, and the longest holder wins. Oh, and it’s only for children aged 3-5. It was complete and utter carnage, but some kids were really good!

We were invited to the rodeo as part of our friend’s surprise party, and were told to dress up. Ky and I don’t have a lot of Western kit, so we just decided to go all out with our Americana. It was a very popular outfit; in fact, one passerby announced (with great joy) that we were “MAGA people”. The combination of people selling deep fried turkey legs, and handing out free bibles, pretty much says it all.

The final highlight was the announcer. He clearly loved the role, especially providing the commentary on the thrills and spills. His best bits were at the start though, where he led the rodeo for a prayer! My favorite bit was the image they had on the big screen; a cross on the mount, and in the corner a man on a horse wearing a cowboy hat. I don’t recall that part of the Gospel, but I wasn’t there, who’s to say that didn’t happen.

After the prayer, we then sang, and I quote, the greatest song ever written. You guessed it, the national anthem. Honestly, I quite enjoyed, and got into the whole thing with gusto. It was a change of pace from our usual weekends, and we had a blast.

Happy birthday Emma, and thanks for organising Matt!
