Every few years, there is a local or global outage of technology.
In 2018, Optus (an Australian telco) spent a fortune buying the rights to FIFA World Cup, and ended up bungling the delivery so badly that they ended up providing the service for free. While this was definitely the right thing to do, whenever I think of Optus, I think of this, and don’t think I’ll ever go with them.
This time, the failure comes from a company called Cloudflare, who you probably have never heard of. Apparently there was a key update pushed into production, causing millions of Microsoft (who you have heard of) computers to stop working.
I’m having a rougher run of it. I fly out of London today, and was due to take off at 11. It’s currently 12:30, and we have just begun to board. I’m flying via Phoenix, but my layover is long enough that I needn’t fear (touch wood).
A 90 minute delay, all things considered, isn’t the worst thing to ever happen, especially when you’re dealing with a global outage.
