Blog Post #32: Elephants

A couple of friends and I have recently formed a weekly check-in group to keep us accountable, based on the concept outlined by Nick Crocker. You can read it HERE.

The basic idea is that a small group of peers, who know you well and care about your progress, can provide a great sounding board as you navigate through life.

Our initial meeting was focused on planning the next few months ahead. From next week, we will be having three 90 minute sessions, where a member takes 45 minutes to outline what they hope to achieve in the next 12-36 months. There is no rules regarding what the goals be about; they can be financial, physical, emotional, relationships, career, or anything in between. The most important thing is that the participant has genuinely decided to focus their efforts on their particular goals.

The next 45 minutes is question time, where the other elephants try and refine the individuals goals. Is there a better way to approach it? How do we measure whether we have been successful? Is there any tips or tricks we could share that would maximize the likelihood of triumph?

From there, we have a weekly asynchronous updates to keep us all informed of progress, and then quarterly meetings to catch up, review, and plot a new course.

The most important factor that will contribute to this endeavors success is the two friends I am doing this with. We are very close, and we are committed to ensuring the best for one another. While we all have family, friends, and intimate partners, it’s important to have a group that are there to help point you in the right direction, and course correct you when you falter.

There are lots of different names we could call this group, but we’re calling it The Elephants.
