If you haven’t already seen the news, the Kansas City Chiefs went back to back yesterday, and no, Taylor Swift didn’t become engaged to her star boyfriend, Travis Kelce. But you don’t come to this blog for the news, you come here the views.
First off, it was a fabulous game. The 49ers felt like the better team for most of the match, whereas the Chiefs looked at times nervy. It wasn’t until halfway through the final quarter that the Chiefs were able to go ahead, and even then by a small margin.
While Kansas City seemed to be the weaker team for much of the game, they DID come home strong. This is where experience matters; Kansas had been won last year’s Super Bowl, so they knew what pressure meant, and how to perform when the kitchen gets hot.
A lot of this is due to the quality of Patrick Mahomes, the KC Chiefs quarterback. He really looked in control for most of the game, and the combination of his passing, ability to read the play, and capacity to motivate his team is only equal to Tom Brady. The difference is that Mahomes is a better runner of the ball. Brady holds the record for most Super Bowls with seven, and while Mahomes is doing well with his third, there is still a mountain to climb. Tom Brady’s greatest quality was arguably his ability to stay healthy; we will have to see if Mahomes has the same luck.
The quality of Mahomes was clearest during overtime. The way he carried himself and the team down the field, even though they were behind by three with only minutes remaining, left no one in that stadium with any doubt that the Chiefs were going to win. It is rare to see that, even at the highest level, so when Mecole Hardman caught the game winning pass, there was an air of inevitability about it.
Now, the game is only half the story; the Americans go WILD for the Super Bowl. My wife’s company had a reserved private area at what was easily one of the rowdiest bars I have ever been to. The staff were extremely scantily dressed, to the point of a health and safety risk, and when some schmuck ordered a bottle, they would bring it out with one of the girls perched on a minicar hoisted up by a few burly bouncers. It was truly wild.
The other thing that gets people up and about is the halftime show. This year, Usher performed, and he did an absolute bang up job. His discography has enough tunes on it to not make it awkward (“Ok guys, now who want’s to hear some of my new stuff”, is not something you want to hear), and his stage presence and dancing is second to none. Rihanna played the previous year, and yes, I know she was pregnant, but her performance was dull and felt very much phoned in. Usher, on the other hand, was ELECTRIC, and the whole bar went wild when he came out. In fact; Ky and I watched it again this evening and have been humming some of his more popular bangers.
You don’t get paid to play at the Super Bowl, but man, do you earn it back in other ways.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed the game as much as I did! The highlights are worth a watch.
