This post might be a bit Inside Baseball: Politics Edition, but hopefully you’ll like it.
If you’re following the run up to the election, you may have come across this story reminiscent of the palace intrigue of yore. It features all the classics: coups, feuding families, and a double crossing.
Ronna McDaniel’s LinkedIn currently lists “Unemployed” as of yesterday, but for the last few years she was head of the Republican National Committee, essentially the party apparatus focused on raising money, deciding where to allocate it, and winning elections. Things were looking promising when she came onboard in 2017, but it has swiftly gone downhill.
Firstly, Ronna prefers to go by McDaniel these days, but her maiden name is Romney. Yep, that Romney; her grandfather is former Presidential Candidate and current senator Mitt Romney. And Trump hates Romney. Strike 1.
Secondly, she was bad at her job. According to Wikipedia, during her tenure she lost eight governorships, four senate seats, 20 seats in the House of Representatives, and one presidency. The 2022 “Red Wave” was little more than a trickle outside of Florida.
Finally, there was a coup being hatched. Love him or hate him, Donald Trump has always been big on the family business. While Don Jr, Ivanka, and Jared are already on the inside, a new figure has emerged. Eric Trump, clearly the dimmest of the three children from the first marriage, is married to Lara Trump, who initially considered running for the North Carolina Senate. Her experience? TV producer on Inside Edition and briefly Fox. Her surname? Much more helpful.
The senate gig didn’t work out, but now Lara Trump has a bigger win; she ousted McDaniels in March this year. Rumours are floating that with his daughter-in-law holding the purse strings, the RNC could potentially bankroll Mr Trump’s myriad legal cases. We shall see.
If all this sounds bad for Ronna, it gets worse. Once outed, she took a 300k job at MSNBC, a left leaning cable news network. Some call it the Fox News of the left. She was announced last Friday, and was let go of today. She made Liz Truss’ reign look like Queen Elizabeth.
Why was she sacked? Apparently, her time spent working for the man who eventually rolled her to install a loyalist was too much for some staff members. Rachel Maddow, who I generally approve of, spent 29 minutes covering the story, and it was also commented on by Jen Psaki, for being a politically charged hire. Ms Psaki works at MSNBC, and had previously worked as Joe Biden’s press secretary!
