Day Out

Our nanny is on leave, so today was just O and I, roaming the streets. It was great!

We did all the usual things; go to the park, go to the library, sing some songs, read some books.

But we get to do that all the time, whereas a midweek day out is a rare occurrence. I wanted to do something that at least I would remember.

Anyone who has met my daughter knows she LOVES animals, and we don’t have any. The closest we go to a pet was the live lobster living in the fridge for 12 hours. Not exactly cuddly.

So this afternoon, we went to the Animal Shelter to “enquire” about adoption. Spoiler Alert: we didn’t bring home a cat. But we did get to play with a rather lovely tabby called Tiger for 15 minutes, and O thought the whole thing was marvellous.

I must say the City of Denver run a much tighter ship than what I remember back in Aus. Our family were prolific adopters of domestic shorthairs; by the time I had turned 21 we had averaged acquiring a new cat every 16 months. I think we still hold Platinum Status at the Shelter.

The places back in Australia literally had dozens, if not into the hundreds, of cats just milling around. You could just walk in, scoop one up, pay based on age, and walk home with it. If you picked the Cat of the Week (as in the week before they give it the forever nap), you might get 50% off. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THE CAT OF THE WEEK. That discount is there for a reason.

We learned that one the hard way.

Meanwhile, the Denver Animal Shelter required you to check in, show ID, and pick a maximum of TWO cats that you would like to see. There were only seven cats to choose from, most hated children (“prefers a more mature environment” ain’t fooling anyone) so we only got to look at one.

A great day.
