Elections

Yesterday was the UK general election. For those who are interested, you won’t read anything here that hasn’t already been covered to death. Instead, I thought I would comment on a strange convention that occurs at 10 Downing Street.

It’s been less than 24 hours since polls closed, and already Rishi Sunak requires his mail to be forwarded. The turnaround is quick. Prime Ministers often have their bags packed, just in case they are turfed out. It must be a sobering experience.

There is an advantage to this rapid change. The Americans drag it out; this year the election is in November, and should Trump (or RFK) win, then it will take just until January until they take over. The job is more intense than UK equivalent, but it needn’t take that long,

Most things change when a new Prime Minister is in charge, but not everything. Larry, the Chief Mouser and resident cat of 10 Downing Street, will stay on. He has survived for 13 years, and seen two monarch, two referendums, and six prime ministers in his time. He ain’t going anywhere.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
