Government Buildings

It’s curious how governments design the architecture of their buildings. Some are grand. We all have examples that we think of directly; perhaps it’s the Reichstag in Berlin, the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest, or the Beehive in Wellington. They’re personally some of my faves.

However, not all buildings are that special. Some are pretty average, and others are downright grim. I had the misfortune of visiting the latter today (and yesterday for that matter, but it was such a rage inducing incident I wish to minimize it to a footnote).

The Social Security building in Denver is worse than anything conceived by even the most philistine of Soviets. Ugly, old, monochromatic, and useless, one has to wind themselves through an unnecessarily long passageway to get to a sun deprived room. Horrible.

Fortunately, the poor souls toiling away have developed a sort of immunity to the decay; like morlocs they toil, but with (assumedly) a smaller appetite for human flesh. At least in a literal sense; they are part of the tax department after all.

I’m glad to have entered and exited without much concern, and thrilled I only have to return once more in my lifetime.

2 stars.
