I voted!

The Australian Federal Election is coming up, and I am not going to give up this opportunity to have my voice heard. Having heard of all the drama and stress about US voting, I am pleased to say that the Australian Electoral Commission does a fantastic job.

Last Thursday I applied for my postal vote. Today (Tuesday), it arrived by DHL. Talk about efficient!

It wasn’t all smooth sailing; the instructions were a little complex, but I figured it out eventually. It was also nice to see some familiar faces on the ballot box; Antony “Kouta” Koutoufides, who played 278 games for Carlton and won the 2006 Dancing with the Stars, is running to be our local MP, and Kammy Cordner, an old family friend from way back, has stood once again for the Senate under the Fusion party (an amalgam of the  Science PartyPirate PartySecular PartyVote Planet, and Climate Change Justice Party). Hopefully she can improve on last time’s tally of 0.34% of the vote.

Tomorrow I drop off my letter to the post box, where it will be sent to the Aus Embassy in Washington, and then onto my electorate in Melbourne to be counted. It’s a long, expensive exercise for the Australian Government, but I sure am glad that I can continue to have a say.
