Put it on the Weber

We bought a second hand Weber today for $80. Honestly, it might be one of the best deals I have ever found, and the burgers we grilled on it were juicy and delicious.

Years ago when I was rowing, we spent so much time together talking trash (or “talking rot” as we called it), that we were always coming up with new phrases and sayings.

Sometimes it was Cockney Slang (we used the word “rhyming” to mean keen, after some guy on the walls who was called Simon Keenan: Keen > Keenan > Simon > Rhymin’. It made sense to us).

Often it was more straightforward. One of the classics was replacing the phrase “getting grilled”, i.e being spoken to in a harsh or critical manner, with “being put on the Weber”. It could be a coach, an employer, a friend’s furious date; anyone really. If you told another athlete about how you were late to training and the coach “put me on the Weber for 20 minutes”, it would make perfect sense to everyone listening.

Hopefully 2025 will be more focussed on grilling meats, and less time of being verbally accosted.
