I am in SF for work until Friday, and usually I stay with my pal the “Cashew King”. However, this time he had family in town, so I had to make my own last minute arrangements.
San Francisco is an expensive city, and as I had blown most of my travel budget on flights, so I ended up staying at the Orange Village Hostel.
Despite my wife’s initial suggestion, and my constant fear, this isn’t a homeless shelter. In fact, they don’t even allow SF residents to check in, which feels slightly illegal, but it is in a part of town which the NYT might describe as “vibrant”.
Nonetheless, a four-person dorm is still a four-person dorm. It is safe, clean, and has free wifi, and the other fellow across from me seems like neither a murderer or a thief.
Is it inconvenient? Slightly. Is it affordable? Yes. Is it a great chance to step out and do something different. Absolutely.
Plus four years of boarding school toughened me up; in year 10 the Four Dorm was the prized allocation!
