It’s my favourite US holiday, and this year we got two for the price of one.
Yesterday, Thanksgiving proper was had at our friend’s place. It was exactly what you’d expect expect; turkey (which wasn’t dry!), stuffing (or dressing as our neighbors call it), mash, bread, gravy, and lashing of wine. We didn’t pass into a food coma, we didn’t have a screaming match over politics, and we didn’t watch any football, but otherwise it was a quintessential day.
Today was Aussie Thanksgiving with another group of friends. There is a small but vibrant Australian community in Denver, including the Denver Bulldogs, the local Australian Rules Football Club, which are the Real Madrid of US Aussie Rules. It was a fun, casual affair, which was completely dedicated to eating desserts and drinking sparkling wine. I’m usually not a fan of either, but on this occasion, it was a proper treat.
Thanksgiving always reminds me of Easter back home; all the fun of Christmas, none of the pressure, and four days to focus on eating and spending time with friends and family.
