On Friday, I went to the Turkey v Paraguay World Cup game. It was a wonderful experience.
For all the controversy leading up to the tournament, the USA did a great job. The crowd was passionate, but respectful. The Paraguayans were in exuberant ecstasy as they not only were able to score (in the second minute!), but were able to hold that lead for 88 more minutes of total Turkish pressure.
Turkey, for all their possession and talent, didn’t deserve a point, or a goal. For some bizarre reason they were committed to pushing the ball wide to their lesser talented players, despite having a Real Madrid starter sitting in the 10. Had they given him more of the ball, it would have been a different game.
It wasn’t the most spectacular game, but I had a blast, and got to enjoy a few days in SF with the exec team to boot. A worthwhile, albeit expensive and exhausting, trip.
