Blog Post #22: Rereading a classic

I’ve started reading the Lord of the Rings on my Kindle as a form of literary escapism. I like to work between books, and in between Alex Hormozi’s $100 Million Offers and Sprint, it is nice to read something that is just for fun.

This is technically a rereading, at least for the first half of the book. In 2001, I was a precocious reader with a deep pride in my ability to read “grownup” books at the tender age of 10. I had knocked off the Hobbit the previous year, and thought I was well equipped to take on THE BIG ONE.

Well, I met my match. I distinctly remember not realising that Saruman and Sauron were different characters, and being completely confused as to how the main villain was both an evil eye that was also a tower-dwelling wizard. The combination of new words, multiple antagonists, and many, many pages was evidently too much for my developing brain.

Having read the first 10% of the first book, I must say that it’s reputation as a true classic is well deserved. J.R.R Tolkien has a captivating style that really hurls you into what it must be like living as a Hobbit in the Shire. It’s quintessentially English, and you can see why it has captivated the imagination of millions for years.

If you’re looking for a good book this summer/winter, I can highly recommend it. When it’s done, I’ll post the review.

I seem to remember that you read/re-read the whole trilogy multiple times, Harry. Perhaps you were just dipping. I also recall that between reading Tolkien you read the entire library of Captain Underpants in single sittings at our local bookshop (without purchasing the books). Good to have some balance.
