Half a bottle

There is one week left of the Premier League, and after 22 years, including three consecutive second place finishes, Arsenal have been crowned champions.

A month ago, it looked like it wasn’t going to happen. A bad run of form and a loss to perennial favourite Manchester City looked like (another) bottled season.

But it was the team in North London who had the last laugh; a last minute goal against Brentford wasn’t enough for Manchester City to secure the three points necessary to take it to the final day.

For Arsenal fans, they don’t care. For Manchester City fans, I can understand the disappointment (although they have already won two trophies this year). For everyone else, I imagine they’re like me, slightly disappointed. The last round of the season sees all teams playing simultaneously, so you have 90 minutes of twists and turns. Sadly, we won’t see that. Or more accurately, we won’t see that in regards to who is crowned champion…

There are 4.1 miles between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, a tiny distance compared to the 44 points seperating them on the table. Three teams have to be relegated; Burnley and an abysmal Wolves have already booked their trip down. This leaves one final place that will be filled by either West Ham or Tottenham.

It is painfully straightforward: if Tottenham LOSE, and West Ham WIN, West Ham will survive. Any other permutation and the Hammers are catching the bus to play Stoke and Lincoln City on wintry Thursday nights. My mother was a West Ham season ticket holder in her youth, so I have always had a soft spot for them.

It really is all to play for. For a deeper dive, feel free to checkout my final (?) Road To Europe Report HERE.
