The odds

Yesterday I wrote about getting back to everyone who had replied to me, and had promised to share my favourite story. Here it is.

A while ago, I wrote a piece on unusual names, such as Shovel. You can read it HERE. One of my buddies, who I shall call R, has an unusual, but not obscure name. Think of it like Percival or Humphrey; similar vibe. You probably haven’t met one, in fact, there is a little under 5% chance you will meet one in your life.

Now, while I was at school, we had not one, not two, but three R’s. I haven’t met a single one since.

They were all multi-talented in a variety of ways, but what they had in common was that they all were excellent footballers, and all played for the 1st XVIII. To have three kids with the same name R on a team of 22 players is a 1 in 872 BILLION occurrence.

Wild times.
